The McAlister Lab at the College of the Holy Cross seeks a full-time research associate/ technician for an NSF-funded project studying the reproductive energetics of facultative symbiosis in the temperate coral Astrangia poculata. The position provides an excellent opportunity to continue developing scientific research and communication skills while co-mentoring a passionate group of undergraduate students. Techniques used for this project will include colorimetric assays of biochemical content in eggs and larvae, optode-based respirometry of larvae and adult colonies, PAM measurements of photosynthetic efficiency, quantification of lipid amount and type in eggs and larvae using IATROSCAN, field collection of adult colonies using SCUBA, light microscopy, digital photography and image analysis, and saltwater aquarium maintenance. Learn more about the McAlister Lab here: Major Areas of Responsibility The research associate/technician will work in association with the PI and a team of undergraduate students based at Holy Cross, and a PhD student and postdoc based in a collaborator's lab at Tufts University. The research associate/technician will have the opportunity to work independently on a research project, expected to lead to authorship in peer-reviewed publication(s), will maintain the lab equipment and supplies daily, and will assist in training undergraduate students. Minimum Qualifications The position requires a master's degree in marine biology or a related field (or a bachelor's and 2 years of post-bachelor's work experience), experience working with marine invertebrates, open water SCUBA certification (and the possession or ability to obtain AAUS Scientific Diver certification). The candidate is expected to have a genuine interest in mentoring undergraduate students. Candidate should possess good interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, a strong work ethic and a high motivation to learn. The position is a three-year NSF-funded project / appointment with benefits, pending continuation of funding , with the possibility of renewal.
