Job Title: Undergraduate Student Research Assistant 2 (Wooster Campus Hort & Crop Science) Department: FAES | Horticulture and Crop Science-JM

This positions work will focus on North American Pawpaw tree (Asimina triloba) fruit quality, pollination, and post-harvest practices. Pawpaw fruit weigh from 50-500 grams with green skin and orange/yellow flesh. They have a tropical flavor profile, compared mainly to mangos and banana, which makes the unique for fruits grown in northern climes. These trees are natives to Ohios woods but have been adopted to be grown in orchards. Therefore, they are currently considered to be an emerging crop for the Midwest. We are searching for an Undergraduate Research Assistant that could work up to 15 hours per week during the remainder of the SP24 semester, between 20-38 hrs a week during the summer, and then up to 15 hrs a week during the AU24 semester. The tasks will change throughout the season and will include but are not limited to:

Field Work

  • Data entry
  • Hand pollination
  • Fruit counts
  • Assisting with maintenance of PVC netting and netted shade structures
  • Fruit collection

Lab Work

  • Sample preparation
  • Extraction of compounds for assay
  • Quantification of compounds using standard laboratory instrumentation

An ideal candidate for this position would be interested in both field and lab work. Field work will be completed in Wooster, Columbus, Belmont, and Urbana OH with compensation for mileage. Lab work measuring levels Brix and color, and consistency and assays of polyphenol oxidase enzymatic activity and levels of select secondary products will be completed in Columbus or Wooster OH. Other investigation in pawpaw fruit would also be considered.
